I was a young boy growing up in Vallejo in the early 50s, living on Broadway, at the west end of Springs Road. Across the street from our house (though no longer there, since replaced in late 50s when a curved street was put in to connect the south end of Broadway into Alameda Street) was a block of storefront businesses.
Right across the street was McConologue's Model Market. There was a passageway between a couple of the buildings just to the north of

Springs Road that was kind of spooky. Anyway, when I was about five or six years old, I was kept home with some sort of fever or illness for about a week.
One

day, looking out across Broadway toward the street in front of these buildings, I saw what I was sure was the body of a kitten that must have been struck in the street. It was there for a day or two, then gone. Later on, after 1956 when I started going to Vallejo Jr. High and had to walk to school past this spot, I would often hear the plaintive cry of a cat.
