I've been thinking about going back to the house on N. Jacob at Roosevelt where weird scary things happened and ask the current inhabitants if they have had similar experiences. I came to the conclusion that going back might not be the best idea, so I am writing and posting this online to see if any other people know about this place and will reply to this post.
We were the first people to live in the house. We moved in in 1969/70, and my father planted the tree that is still in the front yard that same year. My earliest clear memories occur in this house. Maybe it was the close proximity to the Visalia Cemetery, only one block away that caused all the weirdness. Regardless the cemetery was not a scary place to me. My grandmother lived one block away from it on Rinaldi, so it was just a huge playground with strange stones everywhere.
I was four or five when we moved into the house, and I began kindergarten at the school around the corner, Houston Elementary. My teacher was Miss Roller. Sometimes early in the morning I would be awakened by the sound of drawers and cupboards in the kitchen opening and closing and items like dishes and silverware being moved around. The sounds of movement were very loud. After my mother got up I asked her if she was cooking breakfast earlier, and she said no she was sleeping. We had this conversation more than once.
Then there was the night I saw the monster in the closet just black and barely in the shape of a person. I screamed, and my parents came running. Fortunately this only happened once. Another night I woken up by a light when the rest of the house was asleep, and the doorway to my room was glowing in a soft blue light. I was too scared to scream. I just tucked my head under the covers until I fell back to sleep.
The scariest thing that happened was when I was five. I woke up, and all I could see was fire - blue and yellow. It filled my entire line of sight. Was I still dreaming? I had some really strange dreams in that house, but I was not dreaming. It took me a few moments to realize where I was, and when I did I was so scared I could not move. I was in my tighty-whities sitting at the end of the hallway with my legs crossed ''Indian style. '' The grate for the wall furnace was open, and I was leaning into the furnace! My eyes were about two inches from the flame, and I had no idea how I had got there. I had never sleep walked before then, and I have not since that night. I desperately wanted to be in the safety of my own bed, and it seemed so far away.
I was in total darkness and silence except for the furnace, and the damn kitchen was on the other side of the wall. At least there were no noises in the kitchen. After what seemed like forever I realized that my parents did not know I was not in bed and were not going to save me. I have no idea how long the entire event lasted, but it seemed like forever before I got up enough courage to walk myself back into my room.
