Canyonville--home of the seven feathers casino--is one of my favorite places to go and very close to my home. Once a month I meet family at the casino for a night of gambling fun. Sometimes I am heading home in the wee hours of the morning which has never bothered me because I am usually wide awake from the coffee I have consumed at the casino.
The town is so deserted by that hour it is a peaceful drive to the turn-off I take to travel home. One morning

about two I was traveling along the rain slicked Main Street on my way home. I was wide awake as usual because of the coffee I had consumed at the casino.

was nearing the section of town where an older vacant house sits close to the roadway. I was surprised to see the figure of a little girl as she crossed the fog line and made her way across the road in front of me.
Even though she was still several feet away I braked my car wondering what a child would be doing out at this time of night by herself. She was wearing a dress and she appeared to be barefoot the way she hop-skipped as she ran onto the
