I grew up in Clatskanie and still live there. I just turned 60 this year. My older brother was in the same grade in school as Tom Hendricks. I used to work in the strawberry fields in the summers, and Tom picked alongside of me many many days. He was always a kind and gentle guy. The only time I ever heard of him getting mad or causing any trouble was when he had been drinking which thankfully something that he rarely did. Some of the older guys around

town thought it would be funny if they took Tom down to Nevada and introduced him to women.
They drove him down to a town called Winnamuca and

dropped him off at a house in the red light district with enough money to enjoy one night with one lady. They headed back to Clatskanie and thinking they had pulled a great joke on Tom, but when they got back to Clatskanie the joke was on them as Tom was already back in town. He had walked and hitchhiked and managed to beat them back to town. He was still nice after that, but he did not accept rides anymore with friends.
