I grew up in a house just on the edge of the city limits of Clatskanie. It is just above the VFW hall and county road maintenance shop. I lived there with my mom, grandparents and brothers and sisters. We heard footsteps in the upstairs bedrooms above when all of us were sitting downstairs, either gathered in the kitchen eating dinner or in the living room watching TV. We got so used to hearing them that we just named them Fred. Every time we heard the footsteps we just said ''Oh, Fred is walking around again.'' No reason for choosing The name Fred. We just thought it fit. .

I knew Tom Hendricks (Walking Tom. ) He was an odd duck, but never caused harm that I am aware of. I am from Clatskanie and remember once in awhile he would sit by me on the school bus (not my choice.. Lol,) and I remember him once showing me his knife. He was proud of that thing. Sure can't do that these days! Mom used to see him walking into town once in awhile and give him a ride. He was always polite.

I also remember seeing him in the local Safeway, and he came up to me to tell me how pretty my sweater was. He wondered if they made them for men. Lol. Anyway, I had NEVER heard that story of him being in the water for two years... Think that is a farce. I remember when his body was found, and it was nowhere near any bridge. Funny how rumors get going, makes for good ghost stories.
