I was alone in the house after my husband went to work, and warily noted that the inside of the house was deathly still. We lived in the country and the house was situated in an orchard so I could hear birds chirping outside where it was vibrant, warm and sunny; but inside, it felt cold and the silence seemed to have shape and definition, extending to the very corners.
This house was the first home built on Troxell Landing. Actually it had been

three houses originally, but later, someone had incorporated the three into one building. It was quite old, and the front porch was in such disuse that
|
blackberry vines had grown up there.
We commonly used the back entrance, which had a screen door with a hook latch on the inside. At night before retiring, we would latch the screen door, but in order to do so, we had to lift it up in its frame so the hook could meet the latch hole. Otherwise, it could not be latched.
Nearly a week after the lady of the house had gone, I was home alone in the kitchen when I heard a loud crash and thumping around in
