with no neighbors that could be seen, and this little market was only a mile or two away. Anticipating a quick return, we didn't lock up, so when we came back, we were surprised to find ourselves locked out of the house.
The screen door was latched from the inside! We managed to get in by pulling out the blackberry vines from the front porch, jimmying a window and crawling through. We could find no one in the house, however, so it was a mystery to

us how the door got locked.
One time we had guests, who were sitting across from us in the living room. From their vantage point, they could see

into the kitchen behind us. Suddenly, our guest stopped speaking in mid sentence and asked, ''Do you have anything cooking in the kitchen?'' I didn't, so he explained his concern that he thought something might be burning as he had seen a puff of dark smoke move across the kitchen.
One Saturday after we had lived there about a month, my in-laws came for a visit. As we were visiting, our landlady unexpectedly knocked on the door. She had come
