Best not be here after sunset. Strange beings be lurking about in the bushes! I called out to the bushes on a windy night, ''Who goes there??'' The bushes answered me, ''Russell, Russell, Russell.''. Submitted by Ivar

Twenty years ago my husband and I lived in a big old yellow house in the 1300 block of Kennewick NE in Renton. When you stood on the steps before entering you could hear voices, whispering, and sounds like a group of people were having a party going on. As soon as you put the key in they stopped. When you opened the door there was no one in the house. We had a friend stay overnight. He asked in the morning if we called for him last night Johnny Johnny. No, we hadn't. To this day he remembers it like yesterday. There was a basement that I didn't like to go down to. People live there now with our friendly ghosts. They never hurt anyone. Submitted by Lena

Renton, Washington's ghostly secrets run deep literally. An early industry of Renton was coal mining, and there are some estimates that abandoned mine shafts total over 200 miles in length and reach a depth of 700 feet below sea level. There is bronze plaque on the old remaining foundations of the Tipple Tower on Bronson just next to the freeway that attests to the past days. The shafts are sealed off now and perhaps flooded, but to dig these tunnels took their toll in human life. Some victims were never recovered from the explosions and cave in's, but those who were mangled and dying were taken to Renton's first hospital to ease their suffering and perhaps to recover or perhaps to die.
