The spookiest road in Renton, Washington would have to be the quarter mile stretch of Hardie Avenue that runs behind the Fred Meyer Store that is on Sunset and Rainier Avenues. By the light of day all appears normal as traffic bustles to and fro, but there is more than meets the eye. From Sunset Avenue south to train bridge the east side is the blank and indifferent walls of the backside of the Fred Meyer's. The west side is a dirt faced cliff

some 50 feet or so high. This causes almost an eerie Claustrophobic Canyon Effect, more noticeable at night and when alone and on foot.

cliffs are a tell tale of when the road you are now traveling was actually where the Black River flowed out of Lake Washington more than a century ago. When the Ballard Locks were installed, this disrupted its flow, and the river ceased to exist in Renton. Things were so much different as this exact area was the location of mighty long houses of Duwamish Tribe's villages. Cedar dug out canoes would ply this waterway and salmon would be harvested.
